What is great about Bayanihan Books?
February 3, 2008 | |
A friend of mine, Greg Moreno, started a noble effort in bringing quality textbooks to Filipino students via a wiki-based initiative called Bayanihan Books. I remember him mentioning this to me a couple of months back and I led him to the Curriki project, a similar but global project started by none other than Sun’s Scott McNealy. Both uses the Creative Commons Licenses for their materials and both use a wiki engine. The difference? I see nothing except localization for Bayanihan Books and its concentration on textbooks alone - in contrast with Curriki that also intends to have Open Curricula.
I wish him all the luck and hope that he gets volunteers who are really dedicated in contributing quality materials for the kids. I wish, though, that he re-considers and merges his efforts with the Curriki guys and establish a Filipino track for textbooks. Besides, science and math need no localization anyway.

Thanks for the good wishes on Bayanihan Books. Join ka na sa mailing list! Localization and level of adaptation is an important topic that we should discuss.
