Why are there more females in Computer Science in UP?

In the University of the Philippines, the Computer Science department has an almost equal number of males as females in its undergraduate program. During my days, our batch of 60 students, there was a ratio of 5 males to a female. I am glad that females have caught up (but why do I still hear that there are less women in tech?). In a recent study in the UK, girls are more comfortable using computers than boys – which is clearly reflected in our department. So what are boys interested in these days?

In education, there are more females than males – check out your local school of education (or UP’s College of Education) and you will find more females there! Similarly, there are more female nurses than males. So where are the males going?

  2. galing ako UPLB, i noticed na mga lalaki, they’re really brilliant sa pagpprogram, but they’re too confident, they don’t study. so labas nila, bagsak sila, kickout sila. karamihan sa mga babae, i also noticed, they really take time para mag-aral. the question is, how many women graduate? marami akong kilala sa batch ko na nagtransfer ng course dahil ayaw nila ng comsci. it’s not if they’re comfy using a pc, but how interested they are in programming.

the pinoy males? maybe this can shed light on what they’re doing… or not doing… http://www.pcij.org/i-report/2007/raising-men.html
